ESD raised access flooring combines a removable technical floor with controlled electrical behaviour for environments where electrostatic discharge may affect sensitive electronics or processes.

However, an ESD floor is not defined by the label “anti-static” alone. Surface material, flooring construction, grounding or bonding, footwear, environmental conditions and testing can all influence the completed system.

What Is ESD Raised Access Flooring?

Electrostatic discharge occurs when electrical charge transfers between objects at different electrical potentials. In everyday situations, this may appear as a small spark. Sensitive electronics, by contrast, can require much tighter control.

One Floor, Two Functions

ESD raised flooring normally performs two jobs. First, adjustable pedestals elevate removable panels above the structural slab. Consequently, power, data and other approved services can remain accessible beneath the finished floor.

Second, the selected surface and electrical design contribute to the facility’s electrostatic-control strategy. For this reason, the structural floor and the ESD function should be specified together but verified separately.

Why Does Electrostatic Control Matter?

People, footwear, furniture, packaging and equipment movement can generate static charge. Although this is harmless in many spaces, uncontrolled discharge may create problems around sensitive electronic devices or processes.

ESD Requirements Depend on the Application

For example, an electronics production area may require a different control strategy from a conventional server room. Likewise, laboratories, telecom facilities and control rooms can have different acceptance criteria.

Therefore, flooring selection should begin with the actual project requirement rather than with the assumption that the product with the lowest resistance is automatically the best choice.

A product name does not establish compliance. Instead, a useful technical submittal should show the required electrical limits, manufacturer test information and the method used to verify the completed system.

Do not approve a floor from marketing terminology alone. Electrical requirements should be measurable and tied to the project’s approved standard.

ESD Flooring Works as a Complete System

One of the most important ESD principles is that the flooring does not work independently from everything around it.

Floor Surface & Raised Panel

The walking surface provides defined electrical characteristics, while the raised-floor panel carries structural loads. Therefore, an electrically suitable finish still needs a compatible structural panel beneath it.

Understructure & Electrical Connection

Pedestals support the floor and establish the finished height. Stringers may also be included where the tested floor system requires them. In addition, grounding or bonding must follow the approved electrical design and manufacturer requirements.

People & Footwear Can Also Be Part of the System

When the flooring is used as part of personnel grounding, footwear and the person walking on the floor can become part of the tested system. As a result, flooring resistance alone does not always tell the whole story.

ESD Flooring Standards & Test Methods

Instead of copying a resistance value from another project, an ESD specification should identify the applicable standard and acceptance method.

ANSI/ESD S20.20

ANSI/ESD S20.20 establishes requirements for an ESD-control program used to protect electrical and electronic parts, assemblies and equipment. In addition, the ESD Association identifies IEC 61340-5-1 as technically equivalent.

Example: Footwear / Flooring System

When a footwear/flooring combination is used for personnel grounding under ANSI/ESD S20.20, the ESD Association describes two important system criteria:

  • person + footwear + flooring resistance below 1.0 × 109 ohms; and
  • generated peak body voltage below 100 V.

Importantly, these values describe the complete personnel-grounding system. They are not a universal resistance specification for every individual raised-floor panel.

ANSI/ESD STM7.1

ANSI/ESD STM7.1 provides methods for resistive characterization of floor materials used for electrostatic-control purposes. Furthermore, the ESD Association identifies IEC 61340-4-1 as a technically equivalent standard.

Qualification vs Installation Testing

Manufacturer qualification data and site acceptance testing serve different purposes. Consequently, the project should state whether product qualification, completed-floor verification or ongoing monitoring is required.

Does ESD Raised Flooring Need Grounding?

Grounding and bonding depend on the floor system and approved electrical design. Therefore, every project should not automatically receive the same copper tape or grounding-grid detail.

Manufacturer Example: HT FS800

Huateng’s HT FS800 HPL technical specification provides a useful example. The manufacturer describes the system as an anti-static access floor and requires the electrical contractor to provide the materials and labour necessary to electrically connect the access floor to building earth.

However, that requirement belongs to the documented FS800 configuration. Another raised-floor system may use a different approved detail.

Grounding details are system-specific. Always follow the selected manufacturer’s instructions and the project’s approved electrical/ESD design.

HPL vs Conductive PVC for ESD Raised Flooring

Huateng offers both anti-static HPL and conductive-PVC raised-floor systems. Although they can use similar structural concepts, their top surfaces serve different technical requirements.

Nevertheless, not every data center automatically requires an ESD raised floor. The decision should follow the actual facility design and operating requirements.

Structural Requirements Still Matter

ESD performance does not replace normal raised-floor engineering. Therefore, the proposed system must also satisfy the required loads, floor height and understructure configuration.

Panel Construction

Depending on the system, a raised-floor panel may use steel cementitious, calcium sulphate or another approved construction. The electrical finish and structural core should therefore be specified separately.

Panel Size

Nominal 600 × 600 mm panels are common, but the dimension is not universal. For example, the documented HT FS800 HPL panel measures 600 × 600 × 35 mm.

Load Performance

In addition to ESD requirements, review concentrated load, rolling load, deflection and the complete understructure. A technically strong ESD finish does not make an unsuitable structural panel acceptable.
