Walk into a commercial building in Riyadh or Jeddah and you most likely won’t notice the fire safety systems that are built into the walls, floors, and doors around you. That’s kind of the whole idea. Passive fire protection doesn’t really show off the way a sprinkler head or an alarm panel does. Imagine a tall commercial tower with many levels, server rooms, plant rooms, and all those MEP penetrations running through fire-rated walls. Every pipe, every cable tray, every duct section that goes through a rated wall or floor can become a soft spot. If that opening is not sealed in the right way, then the whole fire performance of the wall kind of loses its meaning, and smoke and flame will easily march through the gap like it was never there.
